NeuroStar®TMS Therapy

We are excited to bring NeuroStar® TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) to Southern Ohio as a new treatment option for medication resistant depression as well as OCD!

are you a candidate?

What is NeuroStar® TMS Therapy?

NeuroStar®Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive procedure that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in
mood regulation. Unlike medications, TMS doesn’t circulate systemically, so there’s no risk of sedation or the common side effects associated with antidepressants. Treatments are quick—typically 19–37 minutes—and you can resume your normal activities immediately afterward.

How does NeuroStar®TMS work?

Individuals experiencing depression are shown to have reduced electrical activity in certain areas of the brain. NeuroStar® TMS works by delivering highly targeted, localized electromagnetic pulses to those areas, including the prefrontal cortex, which is the area of your brain that regulates mood. These electromagnetic pulses stimulate the affected neurons, which in turn releases neurotransmitters and hormones such as serotonin and dopamine. These neurotransmitters work to relieve symptoms of depression. Once these neurons are stimulated by NeuroStar®TMS, they continue to release these neurotransmitters for a longer period of time compared to other treatments like antidepressants.

Is TMS covered under insurance?

Yes! TMS is covered by most insurance companies. Prior to treatment our TMS coordinator will verify your insurance coverage of TMS services as well as any potential co-pay information prior to your first treatment.

NeuroStar® Advanced Therapy is an FDA-cleared, non-drug treatment for adults with depression who have not found adequate relief from antidepressant medications. It may also be appropriate for certain patients with OCD. Our providers will evaluate your symptoms and treatment history to determine if NeuroStar® is right for you.

TMS may be right for adults, and some adolescents, with depression who have not found sufficient relief from medications or who are unable to tolerate medication side effects. Our providers will conduct a thorough evaluation to determine if TMS is an appropriate treatment option for your specific needs.

NeuroStar® TMS is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. By activating these underactive brain regions, NeuroStar can help reduce symptoms of depression without medication, anesthesia, or downtime.

NeuroStar® TMS treatment is often described as a gentle tapping sensation on the scalp. Patients remain awake and alert during treatment, and there is no anesthesia, sedation, or downtime, allowing them to return to normal activities immediately afterward.

Most NeuroStar® TMS sessions take less than 20 minutes. Treatment is typically provided five days per week for six to seven weeks, with no anesthesia, sedation, or downtime required.

Most patients receive approximately 36 NeuroStar® TMS treatments over six to seven weeks, with sessions typically scheduled five days per week. Your provider will monitor your progress and tailor your treatment plan to your individual needs.

NeuroStar® TMS is generally well tolerated and is not considered painful by most patients. You may feel a gentle tapping sensation on your scalp during treatment, and some patients experience mild temporary scalp sensitivity or headaches that typically improve over time.

The most common side effects of NeuroStar® TMS are mild scalp discomfort and headaches, which usually improve as treatment continues. Unlike many antidepressant medications, TMS is not associated with weight gain, sexual side effects, or other systemic medication-related side effects.

No. TMS is not the same as ECT. NeuroStar® TMS is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain while patients remain awake and alert. Unlike ECT, TMS does not require anesthesia and is not associated with memory loss.

Yes. Most patients continue their antidepressant medications during NeuroStar® TMS treatment. Our providers will review your treatment plan and work with you to ensure your care is personalized to your needs.

No. NeuroStar® TMS does not require anesthesia or sedation. Patients remain awake during treatment and can return to their normal daily activities immediately after each session.
